Despite claiming they would ban cosmetic animal testing and trade in Australia, the Turnbull Government has introduced legislation with a clear loophole that could easily allow some ingredients newly tested on animals to be introduced into cosmetics sold in Australia.
It’s a broken promise to those Australians who hoped the Government would do the right thing, and it’s out of line with existing bans in the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Israel, and India.
Labor introduced legislation for a comprehensive ban on cosmetics testing on animals in February 2016.
It is time for the Government to do its job to ban animal testing for cosmetics, with NO LOOPHOLES:
- ensure ingredients newly tested on animals are not allowed to be introduced for cosmetic purposes, and
- properly align Australia with EU and best practice on this issue.
