End Live Sheep Exports

Labor wants to end cruelty in the live sheep export industry.

It’s clear this is unsustainable and simply has not changed for the better - despite constant promises and many reviews.

The Government had a chance to act in a meaningful way - it failed.

Labor will stop the northern summer sheep trade at the first opportunity and phase out all live sheep exports over time.

This is about ending the cruelty and supporting our sheep farmers to be sustainably profitable in the future, creating more local jobs.

Sign the petition and send a message to Morrison - end the cruelty now.

The live export trade has repeatedly shown it’s incompetence and greed, not even thinking to limit the numbers carried by, say, the amount which normally has to die en-route, nor choosing appropriate times to ship. They lack the imagination to find ways of making their trade acceptable, yet maintain that it is sustainable. This is just a desperate money grab by people who can’t do their job properly. Send them back to TAFE. Oh, that’s right, TAFE is being removed. Like the ABC.

Animal welfare groups are regularly receiving calls from concerned farmers who no longer want to participate in the live trade and are looking for alternatives.

Millions of Australians are supporting a measured phase-out for live sheep exports because they want farmers to have a more sustainable and secure future, away from this volatile and high-risk trade.

This talk of a city/country divide is just not backed up by the facts – independent polling commissioned by the RSPCA and conducted in April this year found almost 7 out of every 10 Australians in rural/country areas and towns want to end live exports.

More people in rural and country towns than anywhere else (just under 95%) are concerned over the inadequacy of current standards in the trade.

The poll also found that overall, around 3 in every 4 Australians across the country want to see live sheep exports phased out.

I have seen videos of cattle with half their head cut off and blood gushing out in the Middle East. I have seen sheep have their throats cut multiple times, and they struggle as the blood runs out of their throats. Boys in the Middle East cruelly kicked a cow who was about to be slaughtered multiple times. In Egypt, they stab cattle in the eyes and slash their tendons while they are still conscious.

Thousands of gentle sheep have been trapped inside ships. They can’t lie down without being trampled. Some can’t reach food or water. Soon, these ships will turn into giant ovens, literally ‘cooking’ some animals alive. Animal poo and urine gets into the feed troughs, this is gross for the animals. Live export is cruel and should be stopped and replaced with chilled meat slaughtered in Australian (creating jobs) and exported to the Middle East. The Middle East is willing to accept imported chilled meat.

Live export violates regulations and laws:

Failure to prevent animals being transported in a way that is likely to cause harm.

    WA State Animal Cruelty Legislation

Failure to meet the health, welfare and physical needs of animals on board.

Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL)

Failure to ensure all animals can access food and water on demand.

Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL)

Failure to promptly identify and treat or euthanise sick and injured animals.

Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL)

Failure to ensure ewes are not pregnant.

Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL)

Failure to provide all animals enough space to lie down.

World Animal health organisation (OIE) Standards

Failure to provide adequate ventilation to ensure animals don’t overheat.

World Animal health organisation (OIE) Standards

Failure to prevent overcrowding that compromises animals’ ability to regulate their own body temperature.

World Animal health organisation (OIE) Standards

Failure to cancel shipments during extreme heat conditions.

World Animal health organisation (OIE) Standards

    Please help stop live export.

    Kind Regards

    Penny Johnson

Live export of sheep is cruelty to animals on an industrial scale. How did we sink so low?

Animals intended for consumption should be slaughtered IN AUSTRALIA and exported as chilled meat. BAN LIVE EXPORT

Live animal export will be banned in Australia. Delaying the end will simply further line the pockets of a few self interested people and cause even more unimaginable suffering to millions of animals.

I fully support the end to ALL live exports, and in this case the end to the export of live sheep. Thank you Labour for the courage to stand by your promises and you will get my vote , particularly if the liberals refuse to accept the greater nations wishes. Prime minister Morrison end this cruelty now.

Out of date practice, we can export meat product easily that has been cared for and butchered under Australian standards.
