WOMEN'S WORKFORCE PARTICIPATION 'STRATEGY' A CON

Today, after a three year wait, the Liberals announced a ‘strategy’ on women’s workforce participation, without a dollar of extra funding, or a plan to reverse any of their terrible policies.

If Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals were serious about boosting women’s workforce participation, they could start by:

  • Reversing policies from their 2017 Budget that impose 100% effective marginal tax rates on some women (because of the Liberals’ policies some women can actually suffer a serious penalty for working more);
  • Acting to stop penalty rates cuts which disproportionately impact women; and
  • Abandoning their repeated attempts to slash paid parental leave.

Supporting women’s workforce participation is crucial to ensuring women’s economic security. That’s why Labor supports the 2014 G20 commitment to reduce the gender participation gap.

But the Government can’t claim it's a priority for them when they've taken three years to cobble together this woefully inadequate 'strategy'.

It’s not a strategy, it’s a con.

All the Liberals have done is hamper women’s workforce participation. They should go back to the drawing board.
