Save Our ABC

On the eve of the 2013 election, the Liberals promised there would be “no cuts to the ABC”.

Yet on top of $254 million in cuts they have imposed since 2014, this Budget contains a further $83.7 million in cuts.

The Liberals gifted $30 million to Fox Sports and relieved commercial broadcasters of $90 million in spectrum license fees, yet they are imposing swinging cuts on the ABC.

This will only force further redundancies at the ABC.

Australians value the national broadcaster and rely on many of its services. Now more than ever, we need strong, trusted and independent public broadcasters.

That is why a Shorten Labor Government will reverse Turnbull’s $83.7 million unfair cut to the ABC, as well as guarantee funding certainty over the next ABC budget cycle

The IPA agenda being pushed by the government should no longer be pursued. Hands off.

I have gone from being excited to have a forward-thinking PM, to dismayed by the $150M I was certain he was forced to spend (in order to gain the leadership from a far worse bigot) that would decide if I should be considered a person like others, to disgusted by a man unable to lead his party, unable to lead his country, unable to retain – or regain – the trust of the Australian people.

The ABC is the first thing. Labour would also reap some rewards for putting funds back to the arts through the Australia Council

An independent ABC is one of our most important institutions if Australia is to remain a genuine democracy. The budget needs to be increased not decreased.

Now more than ever we need a strong public broadcaster providing intelligent and informed commentary on current affairs and world events, as well as other diverse, quality programming. Australians would be much poorer for a diminished ABC. No more cuts!

We desperately need the full and frank investigation and reporting that ABC media pursue. Integrity and the pursuit of fair and open inquiry are essential if we are to sustain an open and trustworthy democracy.

Subsidies for commercial media operations are not ethical and need to stop. Let the market determine what commercial media deserve support.
