Sydney Says Yes

We didn’t want this vote, LGBTI Australians deserve better, but we have to win it.

If this postal survey is to go ahead we must do everything we can to make sure we are ready for the fight.

I need your help to show that the momentum for equality in Australia is unstoppable.

I believe all people are born equal and shouldn’t be deprived of equal rights when they chose to leave with the person they love.

By denying marriage equality to GLBTI Australians it sends a powerful message to people like me that in the eyes of the government our relationships are inherently less right and less equal than those of heterosexuals. This is completely unacceptable in any country, let alone one like Australia.

Marriage equality tells every gay boy and girl that same sex relationships are equal to opposite sex relationships – that their desire to be in a same sex relationship is the same as their straight siblings and friends.

As a young confused queer kid this would have been a very powerful message to me.

Same sex marriage says to queer kids that if your parents and family don’t support that you know that society at large does so go and find them.

Same sex marriage will be turn down the internalised homophobia that all gay people deal with – that’s why I support same sex marriage.

I support equality because I want to get married! I believe no one has the right to take that away from me, no matter what prejudice they use to justify it. I support it because now we finally have the political leadership and public conversations that are many years overdue.

Unfortunately the representatives of the Australian public do not proportionately represent the views of the Australians – representing what I feel as a long lasting failure in our democracy. What greater first step to revitalizing public trust and attitudes in politics by making real change? I’m only sad that were so far behind New Zealand, Ireland and dare I say even the US now in something as basic as human rights.

Lets just get this done already!

My Partner of 24 years and I went to NZ to get married on the 11/8/2015. We are now married and happy and the world has not imploded. All we have received from the people we tell is joy and love.

The only sad part is we basically eloped so that we would spare the expense of flying to NZ of our family and friends. Apart from SSM being the socially progressive thing to do, our money went to NZ instead of staying here n Australia.

My partner and I celebrated 20years in January, we had all of our family and friends come to celebrate with us in our home in Newtown. We are very lucky to have our families unconditional love and support, I wish this for everyone. For me, Same sex marriage equality is a human rights issue, i am proud to be Australian and an confident that we can make this progressive change.

I believe it is a basic human right that people are treated equal before the law. Gender should play no role in who should be able to marry.

We need marriage and gender equality for all

I suport marriage equality because it is no more nor less than the most fundamental human right to freedom and equality under the law. Present laws are discriminatory.

Every adult individual has a right to be married, it’s time to give all Australians equal rights to be a partner in marriage. I call on all fellow Sydney-siders to say yes and support gay marriage. Thanks Tanya for championing this cause.

Abbott et co don’t get the value of love and family unites us all. How it is expressed differs based on how you come into this world.
